Public figures have to watch their every step and word every time they are in public. The same goes for the royal family members who are always closely observed by tabloids and fans alike. Their body language is scrutinized by experts to understand their behavior and mood, while lip readers immediately jump on the chance every time a royal whispers something in public.
While the royals mostly avoid having private conversations when the cameras are on them, it is nearly impossible to always remain mute. They are occasionally seen whispering small comments which lip readers are too quick to decode. Here are some of the most juicy interactions that lip readers have been able to understand over the years.

Queen Elizabeth II’s complaint during Prince William’s wedding
Queen Elizabeth II reigned the British empire for 70 years but she was rarely seen having private conversations in front of the camera. However, she couldn’t stop herself from showing her objection over one thing during Prince William and Kate Middleton‘s wedding in 2011.
It’s not everyday that you get to see a prince getting married. So, whenever it happens, it undoubtedly becomes a huge affair, for both the royals and their fans. Reportedly, 2,000 people were invited to attend William and Kate’s wedding at Westminster Abbey. But thousands more were gathered outside the Buckingham Palace to get a glimpse of the newlyweds who would become the King and Queen of England after Charles.
They took their first carriage ride in 1902 State Landau. It was the same carriage that King Charles III and Princess Diana used after their wedding in 1981. Though, for fans, it was a historic moment to see William riding the same carriage that his dead mother rode, Queen Elizabeth was reportedly not very thrilled.

“I wanted them to take the smaller carriage,” the Queen reportedly said outside the wedding venue, as per lip reader Tina Lannin (via CBS News).
Experts have guessed that the Queen probably wanted an enclosed coach to limit the interactions of the newlyweds with the fans.
When Queen Elizabeth II didn’t approve of Camilla’s accessories
Camilla’s feathered headgear during her 2005 civil wedding ceremony didn’t fancy Charles, nor the now-deceased Queen. A lip reader told Daily Mail that Charles told his second wife, “They look awful.”
He then joked, “You’re only going to poke my eye.”
Reportedly, Camilla wasn’t offended by Charles’ comment on her questionable choice of headgear. Instead, she admitted her mistake, as she whispered, “If only they’d blow away … It really wasn’t a very good idea.”
Even Queen Elizabeth told Charles, “I did warn her, wearing feathers.”
Royals and their well-coordinated kisses
A lot goes into planning a perfect royal family. Since the day goes down in history, the royals make sure that there aren’t any hiccups. But the planning process went too far when Prince Harry and Meghan Markle reportedly kissed as per a plan. Meghan got the fairy tale kiss with her prince charming underneath a gorgeous floral arch outside St. George Chapel.
Meghan instructed William, “Okay, let’s kiss,” before they locked lips for a picture-perfect moment, as decoded by lip reader Larry Wenig (via Inside Edition).

But this wasn’t an isolated incident. Reportedly, Prince William gave his newly wedded wife the same instruction as they stood on the Buckingham Palace balcony together after their wedding.
“Look at me, let’s kiss, okay,” he allegedly told Kate.

Kate Middleton couldn’t stop crushing on Prince William
Kate Middleton is reportedly swooning over Prince William’s beard. His refreshing change from a clean-shaven look has won over the hearts of the future Queen and fans of the royal couple alike. On November 10, 2024, as she stood alongside Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh, on one of the palace’s balconies during the National Service of Remembrance, Lip Reader Nicola Hickling decoded the conversation between two women.
As per The Sun, Sophie asked Kate, “What, you like a beard?”
To this, Kate replied, “I find it quite rousing.”

As per the same portal, Kate said to her daughter Princess Charlotte during the 2025 V.E. Day Parade, “Doesn’t Papa look smart today.” For the uninformed, Prince William was wearing his uniform and sported a bearded look that day.
These are some of the many occasions when royals have been caught in some candid conversations which resonate with their fans as well.
