In what looks like the most random crossover event of 2025, pop icon Katy Perry and former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau have become the internet’s favorite “wait, what?” couple! News of their possible romance broke in July 2025, which was weeks after Perry’s public split from fiancé Orlando Bloom. And guess what, it was also two years after Trudeau’s separation from his wife Sophie Grégoire. So, pretty much everyone exploded with “not on my 2025 bingo card” level disbelief.
But beyond the memes, there might be more serious cracks in this power couple’s blossoming relationship. Glam spoke with Teresha Young (an award-winning wellness and relationship coach), who flagged some early warning signs. Honestly, they make a lot of sense.
The timeline itself raises eyebrows. Katy Perry barely had the time to take off her engagement ring from Bloom’s before Trudeau allegedly slid into her (diplomatic?) DMs. As Young puts it,
“Whenever a new relationship blossoms soon after the end of long-term partnerships, it naturally raises questions about emotional readiness.”
She’s not wrong. The singer and the statesman are both coming out of very long-term and therefore heavy relationships, and it’s easy to confuse excitement for connection. The coach also explains —
“There’s a risk of mistaking lust or the initial excitement for [a] deeper emotional connection” and that they need to “reflect honestly on their feelings and intentions.”
Well, what she means is that they shouldn’t rebound their way into another heartbreak. Especially when paps are watching. At the same time, opposites attract. But it is only so long before those differences start to become points of conflict. Perry and Trudeau might both be high-profile celebs, but that’s where the similarities end. “They come from very different worlds,” Young points out.

A source told Page Six that Trudeau’s new romance, oddly enough, feels like “a midlife crisis.” Still, Young says that such contrasts “can make for an exciting pairing,” but will they “bridge those differences and build meaningful connections.” Can a California diva and a Canadian legacy find common ground? It’s possible, but it takes more than chart toppers and campaign speeches to make love last.
Now it gets even trickier because both Katy Perry and Justin Trudeau are parents. She shares daughter Daisy Dove with Orlando Bloom, while Trudeau has three children with Grégoire: Xavier, Ella-Grace, and Hadrien. So far, that’s normal. But when Trudeau attended Perry’s Lifetimes Tour in Montreal with Ella-Grace, eyebrows shot up higher than Perry’s Teenage Dream hair bump! Young fears that having a stable relationship needs to precede family blending.
“The ideal is to ensure a relationship is (…) meaningful before involving children, to (…) safeguard everyone’s (…) wellbeing and allowing the relationship to develop at a (…) healthy pace.”
Basically, introducing kids too early could make a fling complicated if it fizzles.
Then again, it sure is too early to call Perry and Trudeau doomed. They’re both successful and good-looking enough to cause an international incident. But the timing makes this feel more like Hot N Cold. If they can slow down and find common ground beyond the cameras, maybe they can surprise us all, right?
