Elon Musk’s tenure as the head of the DOGE–Department of Government Efficiency is ending this week. Donald Trump declared it will be the billionaire’s last day at work this Friday but also hinted at continued collaboration with him. So this isn’t a goodbye for Musk, as Trump values his contribution to his party.
Trump posted on Truth Social that he’s conducting a press conference for Elon Musk at the Oval Office. He concluded the post by saying he did a terrific job and that he’ll see him tomorrow at the conference.
As Trump mentioned, it’s not really the end; it ensures the door is open for Musk to be a part of the Trump administration. The end of Musk’s US government role is due to the fact he had 130 days a year to work as a special government employee. So now that has come to an end after almost 5 months. The tech billionaire thanked the administration for giving him this chance to contribute.
Essentially, Musk was appointed to ensure there’s less federal spending; however, that may not have been achieved yet, even when he had the plans in theory. Moreover, Elon has spoken about the signature spending bill, which doesn’t support Trump.
Since he has reached the threshold of the days he’s allowed to work, there’s nothing he can officially do now. He publicly criticizes the big, beautiful bill that has higher defense spending and a huge tax break. In his time at the office, he helped the MAGA administration to slash and shrink the size of the government by axing thousands of federal jobs.

Almost 260,000 employees lost their jobs during the cut. This was his one solution to reduce spending. Although some employees were reinstated as the federal judges stopped the mass firing. Musk’s mass firing approach even let go of some US nuclear program staff which backfired.
The White House started offboarding Musk from the office on Wednesday, with Friday being his last official day. His 130-day tenure is counted from the inauguration day on January 20th.
Besides, his tenure was supposed to end, but many people assume his comments about the bill may have had a role, too.
In his post on X, Elon declared how his time as a Special Government Employee is ending, and he thanked the president for providing him the chance to reduce wasteful spending.

Musk also complained that the new bill undermined his work. He says the bill can be big or beautiful, but it can’t be both. Initially, Musk wanted to cut spending by $2 trillion, but he could only do so by $150 billion due to his clashes with administration officials.
Now that Elon has more time, he will focus on his own Space X launch. Ever since he took the federal job, there have been a significant low number of sales in his own company. The sales dropped by 13% in the first few months of this year. This has been the lowest it has been since the beginning.
Now, Musk can work towards improving the company stock, which went down by 45%. Musk even clarified the drop in stock to the investors and ensured he would give more time to the company now. Apart from the political stance, another reason for the stock being low is activists who are boycotting Tesla.
