After chasing all the undocumented and illegal immigrants, Donald Trump has now set his target on Zohran Mamdani. Mamdani is the Democratic nominee for mayor of New York City, and he is not shivering in fear.
He has responded firmly to President Donald Trump’s latest controversial remarks. Donald Trump had questioned Mamdani’s citizenship and loyalty. Trump was speaking at a migrant detention center in Florida. He called Mamdani a “100% Communist lunatic” and suggested that he could be deported or arrested. All this when Mamdani has been a naturalized U.S. citizen since 2018.
However, Mamdani has dismissed the comments as “desperate distractions.” He has pointed out that, as usual, Trump is relying on personal attacks but avoiding the real struggles facing working-class New Yorkers.
“These smears are not about me,” Mamdani said. “They are about distracting from a system that continues to fail everyday people.” Mamdani has clarified that for him, the core issue isn’t the insult itself, but what it aims to obscure. There is a rise in inequality, unaffordable housing, and inaccessible public services. And President Trump tries to avoid all the issues for drama.
NYC mayoral hopeful Mamdani says Trump’s threats to crush him are an attempt to ‘DISTRACT’ from his goal to fight for ‘working people’

Mamdani, who is an assemblyman and democratic socialist, said Trump’s speech fits a pattern that can describe his whole political career. Trump has never talked about issues or policies and always relied on racism and xenophobia. He has used the policy of divide and rule.
Now he is targeting Mamdani, who is an Indian-born, Muslim immigrant. Trump seeks to reignite the same “birtherism” politics that he once aimed at President Obama and continues to do so for high-profile people of color. He coincidentally never asked Elon Musk or questioned his nationality or loyalty towards America, when Musk is also an immigrant.
“This is the same old playbook,” Mamdani noted, “Meant to divide us by race, religion, and origin, so we don’t unite against corporate greed and political corruption.”

Mamdani has also stressed that this tactic of creating fear and causing chaos is used to rally his political base. With this, he is trying to discourage immigrant and minority communities from participating in the democratic process. “I was elected by working people in Queens,” he said. “I speak for them, not for billionaires or real estate barons.”
Trump’s attacks on Mamdani come amid major policy developments in Washington. There is the biggest controversial Republican tax bill moving through Congress. Mamdani has claimed that this proposed legislation has been designed to benefit corporations and the ultra-wealthy. It will be at the expense of essential social programs like housing subsidies, food assistance, and Medicaid.
“While Trump is out there attacking me with lies and bigotry,” Mamdani said, “his allies in Congress are working quietly to take food off your table and healthcare away from your children.”

Trump lies like he breathes. The bill cuts Medicaid by $793 billion which will throw millions off the program.

Mamdani also claimed that the timing of Trump’s comments is no coincidence. He said the republicans need a headline and chaos. They don’t want people to pay attention to what is happening in Washington or talk about the bill. That’s why they are putting all the focus on the NYC mayoral election and him. It’s because even republicans know if people pay close attention, they would know who is robbing them.
White House spokesperson Abigail Jackson echoed Trump’s sentiment. She has called Mamdani a “communist” and has warned that his policies would bring “economic collapse.”
Critics say this is part of a deliberate GOP effort to discredit left-leaning figures. They label leaders on the left with these inflammatory names and tags and create fear, all the while they themselves are robbing people of their benefits. Leaders on the right wouldn’t even engage with the other side of the aisle in policy discussions.
Mamdani on Trump calling him a communist: “I’ve already had to start get used to the fact that the president will talk about how I look, how I sound, where I’m from, who I am, ultimately because he wants to distract from what I’m fighting for. As the mayoral race heats up, Mamdani’s stance signals that he plans to stay focused on substance, not slander.
