A Brazilian tourist, Juliana Marins, is trapped inside an active Volcano in Indonesia. She slipped and fell more than 1,600 feet down the trail around Mount Rinjani crater. She has been stuck there since Saturday, as she was abandoned by the hiking guide. The 26-year-old publicist was hiking on Mount Rinjani with a small group of hikers.

She was tired and told the guide to stop and rest. However he left her there and continued the hike. When the guide got back she fell into the steep cliff with no way to climb out this long distance. She had no means to get back or did not know what to do in this situation. Even after 3 days nobody knows much about her condition.

The guide only came to check on her as she was taking too long not knowing she had actually fallen down. According to drone footage, she is stuck between a rock ledge that is 1,640 ft deep. This was confirmed by the Gunung Rinjani National Park. At first the woman was motionless, however, the rescue team heard her screaming for help later.

At this point, she could be injured and dehydrated. Although the rescue operation is ongoing, it is full of challenges. There are terrain limitations, thick fog, and changing weather that are hindering the rescue efforts. There is no helicopter access, so it can’t be used either, and the rescue officials had to retreat due to unsafe conditions on multiple occasions.

Even after her being stuck there for three days, the park is still open to tourists and people are hiking. However, they have been given a warning and directed not to approach the evacuation region. The authorities did not close the climb as it may have caused chaos among other people. The rescuers have been searching for her after she fell into the cliff.

Meanwhile, Marins’ family has asked for additional support as the rescue operation is too slow. A family member stated they have only been able to go down 250 meters after a whole day and 350 meters were left to reach her. They need help to reach Juliana urgently.

After this appeal the family announced that two experienced local mountaineers are headed her way to aid in rescue. Marin’s family learnt about her accent through social media. She had been documenting the journey so far online. This was a part of her backpacking trip to the Philippines, Thailand, Indonesia, and Vietnam.

Her family claims they are in a nightmare currently as they don’t know what will happen. Moreover, Indonesian authorities are offering conflicting updates to them. They are unsure if the update on the food and water reaching her was true. The Brazil embassy is making efforts to keep the family connected to the tour company as the rescue is in progress.
