Donald Trump, with his harsh and often unethical immigration policies, recently made a visit to the detention center at Everglades, infamously known as Alligator Alcatraz. While detainees have started to increase in number, the alleged horrific ways they are being treated there have now come to light.
One of the detainees there, Cuban reggaeton artist Leamsy La Figura, was arrested last week at Miami-Dade. His real name is Leamsy Isquierdo and he was arrested on the basis of charges of assault and battery. Initially he was put up at Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center (TGK) after which he was transferred to Alligator Alcatraz.
As he is being held there along with other detainees, they have claimed that they are being treated without the basic human decency and there is a lack of water, medicine, and other such necessities.
Describing the horrible conditions at the facility over a call from there, La Figura said, “I am Leamsy La Figura. We’ve been here at Alcatraz since Friday. There’s over 400 people here. There’s no water to take a bath, it’s been four days since I’ve taken a bath” as reported by CBS News.
He further added, “They only brought a meal once a day and it had maggots. They never take off the lights for 24 hours. The mosquitoes are as big as elephants.” As La Figura made these claims, other detainees also voiced their support, mentioning the harrowing conditions they are being made to live in.

On the same call made by La Figura, another detainee said, “They’re not respecting our human rights. We’re human beings; we’re not dogs. We’re like rats in an experiment.” He further added, “I don’t know their motive for doing this, if it’s a form of torture. A lot of us have our residency documents and we don’t understand why we’re here.”
Another detainee, who is from Columbia, joined in and said, “I’m on the edge of losing my mind. I’ve gone three days without taking my medicine. It’s impossible to sleep with this white light that’s on all day.”

He also mentioned that his Bible has been taken away, as he said, “They took the Bible I had and they said here there is no right to religion. And my Bible is the one thing that keeps my faith, and now I’m losing my faith.”
The authorities have not yet responded to the allegations that have been made. However, given the way that Trump has been handling the immigration rules, the condition mentioned by the detainees is not an unlikely thing to happen.

As Trump has now said that he is even open to deporting citizens, petitions have started to rise that claim the deportation of Melania Trump and Barron Trump as Trump’s wife is not originally an American citizen and her means of obtaining her Green Card, remain under controversy.
It now remains to be seen if Trump responds to these claims that the detainees have made or if he comes up with some logic of his own to justify whatever is happening at Alligator Alcatraz.
