While increasing crime cases have become an alarming global crisis that social media channels and news reports widely like to cover, police negligence and brutality are topics that are rarely talked about. On June 19, 2025, Dover, Delaware, officers handcuffed and arrested two Black women and four Black children at gunpoint, only to realise minutes later that the family had done nothing wrong.
The wholesome group including Hope York and a 14-year-old boy, 8-year-old twin girls, and a 3-year-old was driving out to a restaurant for the weekend. The cops pulled them over and accused them of stealing without verifying the car’s registration—something that would have shown the driver legally owned the vehicle—the officers proceeded to arrest the adults and detain the children in separate rooms at the precinct.

As per The Atlanta Black Star, Hope York, the mother of the kids, said that only after driving 5 minutes to the station, the cops realised their mistake. Even then, she says, they attempted to justify their actions under the guise of “officer safety” rather than acknowledging alleged racial bias.
One officer reportedly told York, “I want you to know this had nothing to do with race. It’s just that we are dying in the streets, and I have a family to go to.” But York isn’t convinced. Meanwhile, another officer dismissed her 14-year-old child and made a nasty comment. “Who gives a f–k about him?” Have you not watched the news lately? White officers are dying. These Black kids, 10 and 11, are carrying guns and they’re killing us,” York said.

33-year-old Hope York and her friend were just out to pick up some dinner for the group, little did they know that their weekend plans would be entirely ruined by police negligence. Reportedly, their car was suddenly surrounded by roughly 15 police vehicles. Officers blocked the street, guns were drawn, and all occupants were ordered out. York says her son began recording once he saw how the situation escalated.
When they informed Hope York and the rest of the folks that they were being arrested for stealing the car she was driving, Hope noted, “I said there is no way this car is stolen because I remember the day she bought it,” and she had pictures on her phone of buying it.
In addition, after the arrest, Hope and her friend were handcuffed and separated into holding cells. Her son was placed in a separate juvenile cell, while the three younger children were held in a children’s room. Unfortunately, Hope was also threatened at the police station, where the cops told her that they would call Child Protective Services if she didn’t comply with the rules.
However, it was actually a significant misunderstanding due to which Hope York and her group had to suffer. As per the outlet, weeks earlier, the car owner’s mother reported a set of keys stolen by a teenager during an argument in New York. One of those keys belonged to the daughter’s car—the same car legally owned and driven by Hope York’s friend.
The video of the incident, which was posted on TikTok, went viral, and Hope York asserted that she and her children were traumatized. We didn’t deserve that,” York said. In response, an officer reportedly threatened her with a seatbelt ticket if she didn’t leave the station immediately.
Hope believes this is a typical case of racial bias and incompetence. She is now taking legal action against the Dover Police Department for the same. Sadly, as per the National Library of Medicine, unfair police treatment is one of the most common forms of racial bias against people of color. Hope York’s video has sparked massive outrage and reignited debates on racial prejudice ( many more cases like George Floyd and Tyra Nichols), a topic that has been a matter of concern for ages.
