Texas seems to be the capital for some of the brutal crimes across the country! Besides multiple cases of child abuse, domestic violence, and robbery, in a scary and jaw-dropping incident, James Scott Grigory, the accused, shot Leon County Sheriff Kevin Ellis before dying by suicide by turning the gun on himself on June 21, 2025. Three people and two dogs are dead after the incident, which included Grigory’s parents.

Deputies initially went out on a welfare check after receiving a call “about a suicidal subject who was alleged to have killed his parents.” The incident reportedly occurred in Normangee, a town with a population of less than 500 located approximately 120 miles east of Austin. When officers approached the home, Grigory opened fire, injuring a deputy in the face and arm. The injured deputy was flown to the hospital and is in stable condition as of 22nd June 2025 and is currently waiting for surgery.

As per PEOPLE, a SWAT team later entered the home and found Grigory’s father and the two dogs dead. Grigory was also found dead from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. “Our thoughts are with everyone affected by this tragedy,” the Leon County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement. “Please continue to keep our deputy in your prayers.”

The family consisted of a husband, a wife (a woman found in Harris County), and their 38-year-old son, James S. Grigory. They lived at the  Hillbrook Drive address. After the tragic incident, neighbors of the area mourned the loss and spoke to the media. “It’s just devastating… everyone knew, we kind of figured… he was going to kill his mother,” said their neighbor Shannon Nix.

She stated that the family seemed to be engaged in a heated argument before the night of the murder. She was a longtime resident and knew the family. “I walk there all the time, and it was kind of like it just sounded like arguing,” she said. “I wanted to knock on the door, but I didn’t,” she added.

In addition, other residents claimed that they frequently heard loud noises, yelling, and fighting from the house, but nobody imagined that something so sad and brutal would happen. Texas has a history of some brutal crimes and serial killers serving their life sentences in jail today. In the state of Texas, Houston, San Antonio, Dallas, Austin, and Fort Worth have reported the highest number of crimes. (as per Gale Law Group). Meanwhile, drug-related crimes top the list in Texas. From possession to distribution, drug offenses account for the majority of arrests in the state. Due to its size and proximity to international borders, Texas sees high volumes of drug smuggling of substances like cocaine, Marijuana, heroin, etc.

Theft is the second most reported crime in Texas. In a recent year alone, there were over 518,000 theft-related arrests. Assault-related arrests also join the list as several cases range from simple to aggravated—they make up a significant number of violent crimes in Texas, with around 118,000 cases reported annually.

Burglary, which involves unlawfully entering a structure with the intent to commit a crime (often theft or assault), is another leading offense in Texas, with over 100,000 arrests each year. In addition, over 32,000 robbery arrests were recorded in 2017. To stay safe, especially in high-risk areas, avoid walking alone when possible and keep a cell phone handy.

Please remember to seek legal help in case of any problems with the crimes mentioned above. We hope you know that the person watching a crime occur and not doing anything about it is a bigger offender than the one doing it; hence, inform the nearest police in case of any suspicious activity, and stay safe.
