All Social Security payments are set to go electronic soon! The only way to receive your SSDI, retirement, or survivor benefits from now on is going to be electronically. The United States Department of the Treasury is implementing the change in order to comply with the recent executive order.
Executive Order 14247, titled “Modernizing Payments To and From America’s Bank Accounts,” will require all federal payments to be processed electronically. Changes will be seen in the way the Internal Revenue Service as well as the Social Security Administration process payments.
The law will be effective immediately starting on September 30, 2025. Now would be a good time to update your banking information if you haven’t already. People who are still receiving their payments through paper checks will be urged to make the changes as soon as possible.
This applies to people who receive SSDI, survivors’ payments, retirement, or even Supplemental Security Income benefits, as per the official website of SSA. Notably, a federal law dictates that all Disability insurance payments must be made electronically.
Another thing to keep in mind is that you do not necessarily need to have a bank account of your own to receive your payments. People who don’t have one can opt to receive their payments on their card. The two options for the same are Direct Express and Debit Mastercard.

This form of receiving the payment can be disadvantageous if you lose your card. Another complication that could arise with this is that you might be required to pay a fee for withdrawing money.
The safest way to receive your payments is to set up a direct deposit account. You can link an existing account you have by registering it with the Social Security Administration. This is the quickest and most efficient way to receive your federal payments.
You can do the same by requesting a direct deposit in place of a paper check. Beneficiaries have to start off by going to the official website to make the request. You can also call the Social Security Administration to make the changes if you cannot access the website online.

Individuals can call 1-800-333-1795 to receive assistance in making the required changes. The changes can also be made at your bank, loan, savings, or credit union. Once the necessary information is updated, you should start receiving your payments electronically.
Receiving your payments is much safer and eliminates the possibility of losing or having your paper check lost or stolen. SSDI recipients who have to file a tax return can also request a direct deposit.
