Hundreds of people are making the same joke about the “breakup” between erstwhile adviser Elon Musk and US President Donald Trump. Following Musk’s reported resignation from the Department of Government Efficiency, the president and the CEO of SpaceX are exchanging barbs on social media.
The relationship has quickly worsened, despite Trump’s initial statement that Musk will go “back and forth” with the administration. Trump most recently referred to Musk as “crazy” and revoked his government contracts and subsidies for Tesla. In response, Musk called a tax and spending measure a “disgusting abomination” and canceled the “Dragon” rocket.
Many users of Musk’s social media platform, X, have been making fun of the world leader and his former ally as a result of their back and forth. According to some, the “breakup” is the greatest drama currently airing and surpasses all other television shows.
One user wrote: “This breakup between Elon Musk and Donald Trump is better than anything on TV or streaming right now.” Another joked: “Not now sweetie, Donald Trump and Elon Musk broke up and they are fighting.”
Trump said the “disgusting” tax bill isn’t the reason for the commotion; rather, it’s because the president informed Musk that he would be removing the “EV Mandate.” The President took to Truth Social and wrote: “I took away his EV Mandate that forced everyone to buy Electric Cars that nobody else wanted (that he knew for months I was going to do!), and he just went CRAZY!”

Musk has responded by announcing that he will retire the Dragon spacecraft, which NASA uses as a space shuttle to transport people to and from the International Space Station. Musk wrote: “In light of the President’s statement about cancellation of my government contracts, @SpaceX will begin decommissioning its Dragon spacecraft immediately.”
Musk criticized Trump’s “ingratitude” prior to the SpaceX contracts and EV mandates collapse, saying the president was unappreciative of the millions of dollars Musk had spent to elect him. In response, Trump said he was “very disappointed” in the former head of DOGE. Unblocking the pair’s social media accounts has been a possibility for some X users.

A user chuckled: “The urge to unblock both of them so I can witness this first hand.” The harsh social media messages infuriated another, who wrote: “This country is a comedy show.”
Whether the “breakup” is a “publicity stunt” is a question among some. “This breakup is so messy that I kind of think it must be some kind of publicity stunt,” one commenter remarked. There is an end objective, albeit I’m not sure what it is.
Another said it was “predictable” that Musk and Trump’s collaboration would stop. During his brief 130-day tenure, the Tesla CEO contributed to Trump’s election victory in 2024.
