IRS Tax Refunds

The 2025 tax season is still progressing. The IRS has already started to issue tax refunds for 2024 tax returns. Those who have filed their taxes in late June and opted for the direct deposits will soon get their refunds. The expected date for these people is from July 1 to July 10.

The agency is trying to process most refunds within 21 days. However, there may be certain returns that may take longer due to issues like eligibility reviews, accuracy checks, or due to manual verification.

Those who have filed for taxes through paper filings may get their refund late. If there is any incorrect information or additional credit claims, refunds may take time.

New IRS data has shown a significant increase in the average tax refunds amount this year. The overall average refund currently stands at $2,939. This includes direct deposit refunds, with an average slightly higher at $3,034. This is almost a 2.4% increase compared to the 2024 figures.

The increase could be due to the adjustments in tax credits. Another factor could be changes in withholding, or a higher volume of accurate early filings.

For many taxpayers, this increase provides a financial boost during the summer months. Taxpayers who filed electronically and submitted accurate, complete returns will probably see refunds far earlier than those who have done paper filings and have some or other issues.

E-filed returns with direct deposit preferences typically receive tax refunds faster. These could be as early as within 10 days of filing.

The IRS has released an approximate schedule for when one can expect their tax refunds based on the date of their return filing. If you submitted your return between June 21 and June 30, 2025, you may fall within the following IRS deposit schedule:

  • Filed June 21 → Deposit by July 1, 2025
  • Filed June 22 → Deposit by July 2, 2025
  • Filed June 23 → Deposit by July 3, 2025
  • Filed June 24 → Deposit by July 4, 2025
  • Filed June 25 → Deposit by July 5, 2025
  • Filed June 26 → Deposit by July 6, 2025
  • Filed June 27 → Deposit by July 7, 2025
  • Filed June 28 → Deposit by July 8, 2025
  • Filed June 29 → Deposit by July 9, 2025
  • Filed June 30 → Deposit by July 10, 2025

This schedule assumes that everything in your return is correct and no additional review is required. The IRS has warned people that even if they have e-filed their returns, there may be delays. It could be because of any errors or missing documents, or other claims.

The IRS usually processes refunds within 21 days of receiving a return. Taxpayers who have filed on or around June 10 may receive their tax refunds by July 1.

However, there may be further delays, and these could be due to banks and their internal processing times.

The IRS has recommended that people wait for five business days after the “refund sent” status. Even if after 5 days, there is no deposit in your bank, they should contact the IRS.

Taxpayers can use the IRS’s “Where’s My Refund?” tool for more information. This is a free service that provides real-time updates on refund status.

It can also tell you when the IRS received your return, when your tax refunds was approved, and when it was sent. It’s the most reliable way to monitor progress and avoid unnecessary delays.
