Donald Trump serves politics in latest newsletter for veterans

U.S. President Donald Trump’s latest wave of shutdown politics has gone under the skin of many countrymen, including the veterans. As the government continues to extend its lockdown on everything essential, the current administration has been able to use the machinery of the federal government as a tool not only to politicize the matter, but also to direct redressal towards their opponents, i.e., the Democrats, for their previous lapse of funding and so much more. The recent victim of this biased shutdown has been witnessed in the newsletter inbox of the veterans.

Amid all the blame game and blast from the past episodes, subscribers to the federal government’s VetResources newsletter found something really bizarre in their latest edition that arrived in their inbox. While earlier the Veterans used to get tips and other helpful information every week, they now received a heavy dose of political messages instead, right after the U.S. government’s announcement of a shutdown.

This time, the newsletter was headlined as “How the government shutdown impacts VA” and then moved on to point fingers at the Democrats’ decision that led to the expiry of all the funding for portions of their agency.

A portion of this latest newsletter read as “President Trump opposes a lapse in appropriations, and on September 19, the House of Representatives passed, with the Trump Administration’s support, a clean continuing resolution to fund the government through November 21. Unfortunately, Democrats are blocking this Continuing Resolution in the U.S. Senate due to unrelated policy demands.”

Moving on, the newsletter then well-articulated the several restrictions that will be imposed on the erstwhile benefits received by the Veterans, including many of the services that will be stopped promptly. These even include the veteran career counselling and GI Bill Hotline being impacted as a result.

Certainly, the changed contents of the veteran newsletter have left its readers particularly displeased, although many of them claimed that it was not that much of a surprise to see such a message shared with the veterans, given the sudden launch of the shutdown.

For instance, an Army veteran from Texas named Lynn Hauka noted how partisan politics served in the newsletter was something that he never subscribed to in the first place. She tagged the whole matter as yet another example of Trump politics breaking the longstanding military norm of non-partisanship at all costs.

She mentioned, “I was both furious and unsurprised. I really would like Sec. [Doug] Collins to explain how he finds this acceptable.”

Interestingly, when the sources themselves were asked about whether they had plans of amalgamation by inserting politics into a newsletter, the VA representative defended it all completely. The source mentioned, “The message was 100% factual, and even mainstream media outlets and reporters say the same thing.” It must be noted that the subscription to the VA newsletter is under the name of many, and it wouldn’t be hard to guess that the contents of the latest edition might have sparked some kind of unrest among people already.”
