ICE has entered LA on horseback, masks and tactical gears. On July 7th, 11 o’clock in the morning, ICE agents, supported by US Customs and Border Protection and National Guard, took control of the park where families were out in the park enjoying summer with their kids.
There were approximately 90 members of the California National Guard with agents who stormed McArthur park, which is located in a densely populated immigrant neighborhood.
There were kids enjoying their summer camp, and a homeless health clinic was going on at the time of the surprise operation.
The park is historically a gathering place for Central American and Mexican communities. However, it quickly turned into a centre point of tension between federal forces and the local population.
There are videos of mounted agents patrolling walkways and helicopters circling overhead, which have flooded social media. These images really look like military occupation of a hostile city or town rather than an enforcement action.
Witnesses have described the scene as surreal and terrifying. Families were scattered. Many children were ushered into basements for safety, and outreach workers halted services.
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass rushed to the scene to confront the agents directly. “What I saw in the park today looked like a city under siege,” She said. Mayor Bass also expressed outrage that none of the local authorities were notified in advance. She has described the operation as a violation of sanctuary city policies.
In light of these operations, several local activists and community members rapidly mobilized. Ron Gochez is a representative of the grassroots group Unión del Barrio. He noted that dozens of residents got together in protest and defended their neighbours.
“When the community showed up, the agents got nervous,” Gochez later told reporters. This confrontation reinforced the long-standing fears in the community that immigration enforcement authorities were targeting and traumatizing immigrants and their neighborhood. And all of this was done under the guise of national security.
These ICE agents have been given immense power to pick up anyone they feel like and deport them to wherever they want. This has struck a chord of fear and uncertainty in the communities in the sanctuary cities.
NEW: I just spoke to Border Patrol Chief Gregory Bovino @USBPChiefELC, who was the official on the phone with LA Mayor Karen Bass at MacArthur Park today. I asked him for his message to her, as she demands raids end?
“I don’t work for Karen Bass. Better get used to us now, cause…

When asked about the raid, Border Patrol Chief Gregory Bovino, said, “Better get used to us now.”
There was a massive show of force, but the Department of Homeland Security has not yet released the specific details regarding the raid, any arrests made, or whether there was any particular person targeted.
This lack of clarity has only confirmed the suspicion that this was all for to strike fear in the heart of the communities.
The LAPD has also confirmed it was not briefed beforehand. It has raised additional concerns about overreach on the part of the Department of Homeland Security and disregard for city governance.

California Governor Gavin Newsom has also condemned the raid and has called it “a spectacle designed to intimidate.”
He later joined Mayor Bass and other officials and accused the federal government of escalating tensions unnecessarily.
Newsom has also emphasized that the presence of armored vehicles, mounted units, and National Guard troops was very dangerous and not required at all.
Full blown militarized raid on horseback, military tactical vehicles, and soldiers on foot with a perimeter set around McArthur Park. Looks like a big show of force by ICE/Border Patrol. It’s unclear which other military presence is there. Our reporter is on the way. pic.twitter.com/vBY1IE419w

This move by the federal government has ignited a broader debate about the use of military tactics in civilian immigrant communities and the erosion of state and local autonomy.
Later in the afternoon, when the federal agents withdrew, many community members stayed behind. Volunteers set up makeshift support stations. There were protesters demanding accountability and assurances against further raids.
The spectacle at MacArthur Park has shocked advocacy groups, and this has made them more resilient in working towards immigration reform that is grounded in human rights and transparency.
Residents are on the edge now and their neighborhood has become the latest ground zero in the intense conflict of immigration enforcement and civil liberties.
