An Ohio man lost his life after he was shot by police officers 15 times in an apartment building. The family of the deceased man is now claiming that he was unfairly shot even after he decided to comply with the officers’ requests.
The family of Antwan Lindsey has filed a lawsuit against the law enforcement officers responsible for shooting him dead. The family is suing the city and its law enforcement department for allegedly using excessive force, supervisory negligence, and systemic failures, according to local reports.
Lindsey was shot 15 times, prompted by a “loud popping noise.” On July 8, 2023, officers arrived at an apartment building located in Columbus, Ohio. The Franklin County sheriff’s deputy was told that Lindsey had a gun and was threatening people with it.
Several officers reached the apartment building to assess the situation. The first deputy who spots Linsey instructed him to show his hands. The body cam of the deputy shows backup arriving on the scene.
In the bodycam footage, Lindsey is seen standing in a doorway located between a hallway and a stairwell. The lawsuit filed by Lindsey’s sister notes that the man was surrounded by police at that point.
The lawsuit claims that Lindsey had managed to put his gun on the floor as instructed by the officers. He also followed the officers who asked him to stand with “chin high” and his arms raised high. According to the lawsuit, Antwan Lindsey stood motionless in the doorway moments before his death.

“Taser, taser, taser,” an officer standing in the stairwell is heard saying. According to the lawsuit, Lindesey was tased by an officer, which made a “loud popping noise.” The man collapsed to the ground as a result of being tased.
The four officers present in the stairwell opened fire on Antwan. 38 rounds were reportedly fired by the group of officers. 15 of the shots landed on the target, leading to Lindsey’s tragic death. He was shot in his head, thigh, back, upper chest, and arm.
A plea to indict the officers responsible for shooting Lindsey was denied. A statement from the county prosecutor’s office revealed the thought process of the officers to open fire. The release shared how the officers thought that they had heard a gunshot, which prompted them to shoot at Lindsey.

Multiple officers present at the scene later confessed to thinking that the sound the taser made was a gunshot. “Immediately before I fired my weapon, I heard a pop that I believed was a gunshot, and I believed that the suspect had just fired at the officers in the south stairwell/stairway and that he was turning to fire at us,” an officer present at the scene admitted.
The family of Antwan Lindsey is seeking $75,000 in damages as well as a court order that will mandate reforms to Columbus police policies and training procedures. The family told WSYX that Lindsey “did not pose a serious threat of harm to any person.”
