Amid his feud with President Donald Trump, Tesla CEO Elon Musk has received criticism from his former girlfriend. Canadian singer Grimes took to Musk owned platform X and called it “a poison” and “a prison”.
The 37-year-old singer who dated Musk from 2018 to 2023 and shares three children with him, returned to X after a hiatus and expressed her hatred towards the platform. She wrote in a tweet, “Ok I’ve basically been entirely off social media and returning here it is overwhelmingly abundantly and profoundly clear that this place – and all of these places – are a poison – a prison of utterly short form deep sounding nonsense attached to no one that ur brain will discard imaging its learning. The entire thing is a theatre. A shitty pale simulacra of a life.”

This isn’t the first time Grimes has expressed her resentment towards social media platforms, especially Musk’s X. In April this year, she wrote that she finds X (formally known as Twitter) “really dark” and “unhealthy.”
Her tweet reads: “I’ve been way more offline lately, tried all the apps for a bit yesterday and man! It’s rly dark on here! I think it’s very unhealthy to be on social media, it feels like a ghost town of depression, bitterness and pictures of beautiful women doing sext things. I feel like this is a massive moral failure of all the apps. And it’s causing great harm to society.”

In a subsequent tweet, she wrote, “Everyone’s fighting over fake problems while they don’t notice the existential ones. When in reality they won’t even solve those issues they might pass some legislation that will solve it that might be overturned later but most of them don’t even look into the politics, don’t even know how they work, and r just angry someone thinks differently from them which will always happen.”

Grimes shared an on-and-off relationship between 2018 to 2023 until they permanently decided to part ways while sharing custody of their three children: son X Æ A-Xii, 4, daughter Exa Dark Sideræl, 3, and son Techno Mechanicus, 3. A few months ago, fans noticed tension between the former couple as Grimes claimed that Musk didn’t inform her before taking their son X to the Oval Office.
On February 11, the 4-year-old child faced the cameras alongside his father while Trump signed an executive order granting Musk’s DOGE more powers. Grimes wrote on X, “He should not be in public like this.”

She later wrote in another tweet, “I have tried begging the public and my kids dad to keep them offline, and I’ve tried legal recourse. I follow you here I’ve seen young ppl destroyed by the internet too. The state of my children’s lives being public is of grave concern to me and I think about how to solve this every day.”
“It’s insane to me that there’s no way to deal with this . I would hope there was some law that would allow a parent to veto small children from living public lives but I don’t even trust the law to help me now if I tried to invoke it tbh. We are in the Wild West of information content and the dismantling of privacy and it’s very concerning,” she added.
As Grimes speaks against social media platforms, including Musk’s X, we wonder if the billionaire would react to her public criticism and opinions.
