What if George Clooney himself contacted you and asked you for money? Well, something sort of happened with a woman from Argentina, who has lost almost £10,000 (about $13,000), after believing a fake account posing as the Hollywood legend. According to reports, it started with the unnamed victim coming across an account on Facebook that claimed to be Clooney.

She revealed that after she started following the account, she received a message that asked her if she possessed a Fans Club card. From there, she began talking to the account, which was apparently verified, for the day for the next six weeks. According to the reports, the victim also began receiving videos of George Clooney, which were AI-generated, but made her believe she was actually speaking with the star. Those deep fake videos looked real to the Argentinian woman, as the actor was seen blinking, sometimes moving his mouth, asking if she was okay.

In one of those clips, Clooney is seen apparently saying, “Thank you so much for supporting me. I promise to pay everything to you. I love you.” It was then that he asked for money from the woman, claiming that it would be used to get a divorce from his wife, Amal Clooney, a human rights lawyer.

The woman revealed to the local press that the Wolfs actor asked her to put the money on a Fans Club card and also added that he would repay her by getting her a job instead. “He told me that he was going to help me get a job and so asked me for money for the card. Then he would ask for more money to be sent, and later, I would need to send more to activate it,” the woman said.

At this point, she had already transferred her a whopping £10,000, but soon realized that there was something suspicious about the whole thing. When she discovered that she’d been scammed, she attempted to contact the FBI.

It is important to note that she is definitely not the first victim of a romance scam, although with a star. There are plenty, especially elderly people who lose their hard-earned money over this kind deceitful interaction. Earlier this year, a 53-year-old French woman, who goes by Anne, divorced her husband, who was a millionaire, because she believed that she was dating Brad Pitt.

Speaking with the BFM TV, she said that it all began in 2023. She received a message on Facebook account, where the scammer was posing as Brad’s mother. After igniting an unexpected relationship, Anne lost around a whopping £700,000 over the course. She was under the impression that she was helping the Hollywood A-lister with his cancer treatment.

She fell for the whole thing and eventually divorced her husband when the account proposed her. She only understood what was going on after having a hard look at the photos of real Brad Pitt with his girlfriend Ines de Ramon.

In 2024, Anne ultimately contacted authorities, and an investigation was promptly launched. Daily Mail reports that it was determined that the scammers were three Nigerian individuals.
