Back in 2023, PC Shaun Reeve reopened the case of Sarjit Kaur Mann, a 20-year-old woman who had disappeared mysteriously some 50 years ago. As reported by Tyla, Reeve “heads a cold case missing person team officially known as the Review Team of the Missing Person Investigation Team” and he has reopened this old case with the hopes of bringing closure to the family of Sarjit Kaur Mann.
Sarjit was a student at Birmingham University and moved to Birmingham from India for her studies. She was a bright student and also had the reputation of being sensible and reserved. In the Autumn of 1976, Sarjit went on a road trip with her brother and sister-in-law but unfortunately never made it back home.

After four days had passed, Sarjit and her family went to a beach in South France where she reportedly made friends with “three European, white females” as reported by Tyla. On September 24, as her family came back from the vacation, Sarjit chose to stay behind for three more days to continue exploring the surroundings.
However, her family had no idea that they would never hear from her again and neither would she come back home. Regarding the same, PC Reeve told Metro, “On 27 September, an unknown female who used the name Jane called the family home and told them Sarjit had drowned on a beach. The origin of this call was never traced. Unfortunately, we’ve been unable to track ‘Jane’ down.”
PC Reeve also mentioned how he and his team are putting forth their best efforts in finding out what happened to Sarjit. He mentioned, “Anything that anyone could think of in terms of proof of life, we covered. We have made hundreds of inquiries with the hope that she’s alive – that she started a new life elsewhere.”
He further added, “Inquiries have taken us to countries around the world. We know she hasn’t contacted family since. If she has passed away, we are very much relying on DNA – relying on the body to be recovered, but that hasn’t been done yet.”
Talking about the only photo of Sarjit he had at the beginning of the case, Reeves said, “It was terrible quality. It was really grainy, and looked nothing like her. But it was the image we had and there was little we could do to retrieve new photos as this was going back to the 70s.”
However, in December 2024, Reeves got a clear picture of Sarjit from her nephew, who was a kid of 6 years during the time of her disappearance. Talking about the same, Reeves said, “By putting this enhanced photo out, we are hoping someone who recognizes Sarjit will trigger old memories in people who knew her.”
It now remains to be seen if this new and enhanced picture of Sarjit indeed helps the investigation process and her family finally gets some news that would bring them closure.
