A woman’s face in the UK “blew up” after an extreme allergic reaction. Joanna Hayes, who stays in an apartment provided by the Community Housing, revealed how a mould situation turned life-threatening.
Hayes and her two-year-old daughter had to risk their lives just by staying in the accommodation. The toddler even needs an inhaler to help her breathe, given the condition of their Worcestershire flat. The mother-daughter duo has both been riddled with rashes caused because of the mould.
The spores that caused the reaction reportedly started appearing in the house a year ago. The mother of one moved into the apartment in June and soon found out that the mould was growing in the place. Photos taken at the site show just how terrible Joanna’s living conditions are.
In the snaps, huge patches of mould can be seen growing on the walls. One of the snaps even shows mould growing in the shoes that were placed inside a cupboard. The mould infestation also had spread to the furniture. A photo showed the sofa in Joanna’s living room being covered with a growth of mushrooms.

Things got out of hand when Joanna had to be rushed to the hospital after a severe allergic reaction affected her. The 42-year-old’s lips swelled up and appeared to be twice the normal size. Additionally, she and her daughter both developed angry, red rashes all over their bodies.
Joanna even went into anaphylactic shock, which could have proved fatal if she hadn’t received medical attention. The Worcestershire mother shared how she and her daughter had been sleeping in her car after the incident to avoid going into another anaphylactic shock. The 42-year-old revealed how she had tried to treat the mould before it “got worse and worse, the colder it got, to the point where the wallpaper was falling off.”
She shared how a significant-sized patch of mould started growing in the living room. Even the bed that was in use got infested with mould. “It is everywhere,” Joanna added.

Joanna shared that the Community Housing team arranged for a mould wash after her initial complaint. The wash did very little to help because the mould kept growing back. “Me and my daughter have started to suffer endless chest infections and ENT issues, so my two-year-old needs an inhaler,” Joanna revealed.
Community Housing addressed the incident while apologizing for Joanna’s experience. A spokesperson noted that they would support the mother and help her feel “safe and well.”
