The former first lady of the US, Michelle Obama, has eventually ended up facing fierce criticism from people following some of her remarks on women reproductive health. She suggested that producing life is “the least” of what a woman’s reproductive system does.

Michelle made these remarks on the latest episode of her podcast, IMO – ‘In My Opinion’, which she co-hosts alongside Craig Robinson, and she discussed women’s health alongside her brother. The episode featured Dr Sharon Malone, a leading OB/GYN, as the guest.

In the episode, Michelle Obama stated, “Women’s reproductive health is about our lives. It’s about this whole complicated reproductive system that the least of what it does is produce life. It’s a very important thing that it does, but you only produce life if the machine that’s producing it — if you want to whittle us down to a machine — is functioning in a healthy, streamlined kind of way.”

Though she said these words primarily to broaden the conversation on reproductive health for women, where Dr Sharon Malone could also present her perspectives, and the former first lady claimed that it has been narrowly reduced to the right to abortion, reflecting on the “question of choice.”

However, critics are of the view that this type of comment hugely undermines the value of motherhood and also the significance of childbearing.

It might have been cleared on the show, only for what reason Michelle Obama said that, as this was significantly to dig deep into the subject, but people certainly didn’t take it casually and are raising their voices. Prominent pro-life voice and wife of Republican Congressman Brandon Gill, Danielle D’Souza Gill, addressed her comments, saying, “This is exactly the problem with modern feminism — it downplays the miracle of life and the true power of motherhood.”

Isabel Brown, who is also a well-known conservative commentator, called Michelle a “supposed feminist icon” who “dismisses the one uniquely female role that should be celebrated.”

Besides, several people on social media refused to agree with her comments, with a person even stating, “Her position is anti-science and anti-reality!”

In the same podcast episode, she was further seen criticizing the Republican men for not uttering any word regarding the health issues, persisting in women and said – “They sit on their hands… trading out women’s health for a tax break or whatever it is.” Though she accused Republican women, too, of voting based on their husbands’ preferences.

However, in general, she might not have said it in the sense that the critics are portraying. It is evident from her recent remarks that she said during the struggles she went through while raising her daughters, and now how incredible adults they have become.

This reflects on the fact that she does know the value of motherhood and is aware of what it means to be a parent.
