The immigration crackdown in Trump’s regime and ICE is separating several families. They are deporting kids as well as adults who have illegal or questionable immigration status. The worst cases are those in which parents are deported or held back at the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement office, and their kids are at home alone.

Some of them are too young to understand what’s happening. In Gabriela Pineda’s case, her mom was detained at the US ICE office on June 4 and moved to a Kentucky detention center. As Wendy Sarai Pineda awaits deportation, her 6-year-old daughter is unaware of why she is gone and when she’ll get to see her again.

Her fiance, Camerino Gomez, is left to take care of her daughter. The biggest hurdle is that he isn’t the legal guardian and has only known Gabriela for a year now. He fears the situations where a legal parent will be required for Gaby, and he cannot be present there.

Moreover, there is no way he can travel with Gaby and take her to Wendy when she gets deported. ICE has her passport, and there are no rules around him accompanying her as she is still a Honduran citizen with an asylum case pending. Oftentimes, when parents are detained by the ICE, their kids end up with relatives or foster care.

So Gomez fears if he cannot take care of her legally, she might get lost in the system, and Wendy will never get to see her again. Wendy was held back when she went to the immigration office after receiving an appointment message.

She was unaware of her deportation order while she was allowed in the US when Biden was president as she wasn’t a threat to the country. Since her stay was not exactly authorized by the Trump administration, she used to check with ICE on the next steps. However, this time, she was detained at the office with no explanation and might get deported soon.

When she got detained, at least 20 other people were taken in a white unmarked van while their relatives cried. In the past few months, many children with ages ranging from newborns to high schoolers have been separated from their parents. And their fate isn’t exactly determined yet.

In Gabriela’s case, the future is uncertain. Gomez is not the legal guardian; however, he is still taking care of her. When he goes to work, Gaby spends time with an elderly neighbor. On other days, Gomez’s kids and his brother’s family take care of her. The elderly neighbor, 70-year-old Maria Ponce, says how the situation breaks her heart seeing Gaby all alone, not knowing when she’ll meet her mother.
