Luigi Mangione’s diary entries could be proof that the murder he allegedly committed was premeditated. New York prosecutors presented the 26-year-old’s diary as proof that consisted of entries from months following the death of the UnitedHealthcare CEO.
Mangione was arrested on December 9 as the prime suspect in the killing of Brian Thompson. The CEO was shot to death by a masked man outside a hotel in Midtown Manhattan on December 4, 2024. Police reports revealed that the shooter was on a bike and fled the scene after assassinating Thompson.
5 days after the CEO’s death, Luigi was arrested at a McDonlads. At the time of his arrest, the 26-year-old was found with multiple guns, bullets, several fake IDs, and a letter addressed to the authorities. The letter notes how the “parasites” in the insurance business “had it coming.”
“To the Feds, I’ll keep this short, because I do respect what you do for our country,” the same letter read. He went on to add how he wanted to save the feds a “lengthy investigation.” The leader concluded while noting, “I state plainly that I wasn’t working with anyone.”
The shocking new evidence provided in court gives us an insight into Mangione’s thoughts from August 2024. “I finally feel confident about what I will do. The details are coming together. And I don’t feel any doubt about whether it’s right/justified,” one of the entries from August reads.
In the same entry, he talks about being glad of his decision to procrastinate because “it allowed me to learn more about [UnitedHealthcare],” the entry reads. In another entry, Mangione also discusses the option of targeting another individual while referring to them as “KMD.”

He goes on to explain how that would be an “unjustified catastrophe,” and would ” be perceived mostly as sick.” The 26-year-old also writes how KMD would “do nothing” to spread awareness or improve people’s lives. “The target is insurance. It checks every box.”
Another diary entry from October 2024 writes about a New York City conference while noting his disdain for the event. He notes how the conference “embodies everything wrong with our health system, and-most importantly-the message becomes self-evident.”
In the court filing, the prosecutors alleged that Thompson’s death was premeditated and carefully planned by Luigi. The prosecutors claimed that the 26-year-old diary entries detailed how he “hoped” that killing the CEO would “hit a real blow to the company’s financials.” In the entries, he also called Thompson “a greedy bastard that had it coming.”

Soon after his arrest, Luigi pleaded not guilty on December 26. The 26-year-old was charged with 11 counts, including first-degree murder, second-degree murder as an act of terrorism, and various weapons charges. Luigi faces the possibility of receiving the death penalty if he is found guilty.
Ever since his arrest, people have rallied to support the 26-year-old. People have even donated money to help Mangione. Reportedly, donations of around $300,000 were made to help Luigi.
