A horrifying report from New Mexico has left the world shocked. Two boys under the age of 10 got into a gun standoff with law enforcement. The boys refused to drop off the loaded handgun even after being asked to. The disturbing details of what happened next are sure to give you the chills.
The video released by the Sheriff’s department shows the pair hiding behind an air-conditioning unit. The clip shows officers trying to get the children to drop the gun. The boys, one 7 years old and the second 9, continue to hold the officers at gunpoint despite the warnings.
A drone footage that was released shows the boys looking around as they try to avoid being arrested. Both children can stand together closely while one of them continues to hold the gun up. The officers present at the scene can be heard pleading with the pair in the bodycam footage, which was also released.
“Put it down, babe,” one officer urges the pair in the clip. The officer can also be heard telling the two children that they aren’t in trouble and asking them to put the gun down. “Come and talk to us,” the officer can be heard saying.
After abandoning the attempt to de-escalate the situation, the officers decide to shoot two bullets at the kids. Soon after, the video shows the officers surrounding them immediately. The shocking incident took place on February 16.

The video has been released by the Sheriff’s office as part of “a new initiative designed to address critical service gaps in the community”. The Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office decided not to arrest the boys involved in the incident.
John Allen, who is the Sheriff, noted how the incident is a “complex intersection of juvenile crime, mental health, and public safety. He went on to explain how the department is doing its best to bridge the “service gaps.” Sheriff Allen added how they are focusing on their ability to work with the youth “involved in firearms or violent crimes.”
According to an Albuquerque Journal report, the children have not been removed from their families, nor have any charges been pressed against them. Authorities have been unable to find out just how the children got their hands on the firearm. The handgun was seized by the cops at the scene of the incident.

“We know one side is going to say, ‘Lock them in jail.’ They’re 7 and 9 years old,” Allen shared. He noted how children are the future of the country. “I told you before, numerous times in numerous interviews, that I understand the frontal lobe,” he shared.
Fox News spoke to an expert at the department’s behavioral health unit, who revealed the aftermath of the incident. The member revealed that the department is “providing every recourse possible to assist the children involved”.
