Mikhail “Werewolf” Popkov, 61, dubbed the “Angarsk Maniac,” has finally given a haunting explanation of why he brutally executed at least 90 Russian women. According to police sources, there could be many other undiscovered victims, so his total tally could be “closer to 200.

Popkov, who was a police officer himself, preyed on vulnerable women between the ages of 18 and 50. Most of his m—ers have a similar grim style, where he typically r—d his victims before painfully ending their lives. He used various tools for the executions, including items like knives, axes, hammers, spades, and even screwdrivers.

One of his victims was Tatyana S, a cleaner, whose body was incinerated by the former police officer in Angarsk in 2011. Another woman, who had the misfortune of crossing paths with him, was dismembered by him after she was dead.

Popkov was arrested from the latest crime site by a deserted water pumping station. Handcuffed, the serial killer stood there, coldly confessing, “I committed the murder.”

This chilling confession is not the end, as he then delved into a sickening explanation of his killings. He insisted that he went on a m—er spree because he aimed a “cleanse of prostitutes.”

Mikhail then went on to describe the crime he recently confessed to. “I was on a bicycle, about to cross the park… I met this woman I didn’t know, or she asked me something, and some conversation ensued,” he narrated.

Popkov added that what started off as a harmless encounter soon turned into a dispute, which ended when he hit her with a small axe. The killer added, “No, I think I jus pushed her over there and she fell over there. Then I stepped back, took out a match, threw a match, it went up in flames.”

His gory details continued, “I just got on my bike and took off. I put axe right on the grass. Who will be looking for her at that time?”
The remains of this victim were discovered in 2011, but at that time, it couldn’t be linked to him. If his confession gets a conviction this time, it would be the 90th m—er attributed to the “Angarsk Maniac.” However, sources think his numbers could be “closer to 200” as every year, he keeps on confessing to new killings in a clever attempt to improve his sentencing.

Popkov is already serving two life sentences with an additional 10 years for his horrific crimes against women. In 2012, following an arrest, he told the police, “They [prostitutes] abandoned their husbands and children at home and went out to party as if it was the last day on earth.”

Some theorists believe his killing spree was triggered by his wife, Elena, having an affair with her coworker. According to TAS, he was diagnosed with homicidal mania, which is “a  condition when a person had an irrational desire to kill someone.”
