Donald Trump’s administration is making sure nobody is safe from the threat of mass deportation, not even green card holders. The government is currently targeting international students in its immigration crackdown.
Green card holders are entitled to reside and work in the country while they are protected by the U.S. laws. The Trump administration has set the record straight by recently deporting a Green Card holder. This move on the government’s part proves nobody other than birth citizens is fully safe from the prospect of deportation.
The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services states that a Green Card holder is protected by the law only if they “do not commit any actions that would make you removable under immigration law.”
A Green Card can be acquired if an individual is an immediate family member of a US citizen. Another way is to find employment in the country, and the last way is to seek refugee or asylum status. Once in possession of a Green Card, the holder is “required to obey all laws of the United States and localities.”
The only way a Green Card holder can be deported from the country is if they violate provisions set by the Immigration and Nationality Act. Another reason for deportation may be the individual losing their permanent resident status. Helping a person illegally enter the U.S. could also be grounds for deportation. A Green Card holder who has commited crimes like rape, murder or fraud risk being deproted.
A person who has committed an aggravated felony, been convicted of drugs or firearms crimes, or even engaged in criminal activity that poses a threat to public safety or national security issues is grounds for deportation, according to Berardi Immigration Law.

The buzz about Green Card holders being deported increased when the Trump administration arrested Mahmoud Khalil, who was an anti-Israel activist. The Department of Homeland Security accused Kahlil of leading “activities aligned to Hamas, a designated t-rrorist organization.” Following the arrest of the Green Card holder, Trump noted how Khalil’s arrest was “the first arrest of many to come.”
Several Democrats have hence come forward to criticize the President and point out how Khalil’s arrest was an assault on freedom of speech. Senate Judiciary Committee Democrats accused Trump’s actions of being “straight up authoritarianism.”
Trump revoked Mahmoud Khalil’s legal status over his decision to speak out—which isn’t a crime.
Every Member of Congress should be outraged at this blatant erosion of our constitutional rights.

Another topic of heated discussions has been the current government’s betting process for international student visa applications. The Trump administration fully intends to keep Palestine supporters out of the country. The government plans to increase the intensity of the screening process, starting with social media screening.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio has previously noted how the student visa is not a right but a “privilege.”
“I don’t know the latest count, but we probably have more to do,” he said in reference to the hundreds of student visas being revoked.
