The Social Security Administration (SSA) has seemingly caused confusion among people, especially the beneficiaries, who received a misleading email from their side concerning President Donald Trump’s tax cuts, which can affect the benefits surrounding Social Security. The social security recipients received the mail, which stated that the new tax law would be free from any sort of federal income taxes on benefits for nearly 90% of recipients, eventually offering them “immediate relief.”

However, reports say that this claim is false. Despite whatever is written in that email, the tax cuts of Donald Trump, which Congress passed in a $900 billion package widely known as the “One Big Beautiful Bill,” have not eliminated the federal taxes on Social Security.

On the contrary, the tax cuts extend the president’s previous 2017 tax cuts and bring in a temporary tax deduction for seniors over 65, which is reportedly set at an amount of $6,000 for individuals and $12,000 for married couples. Though this can certainly ease the burden of taxes for a few people, but doesn’t get rid of taxes entirely on the Social Security benefits.

Reports also say that the email has been sent by Frank Bisignano, the SSA Commissioner, and on the contrary, has praised the new tax cuts, stating it as a “historic step forward” for America’s seniors. Countering that, several critics have noted that this particular communication is politically inaccurate.

The White House, alongside the SSA, has yet to comment on the misleading email.

Several former SSA officials and some Democratic lawmakers have condemned the email. Rep. Frank Pallone (D-NJ) has clearly called this message a “lie,” reflecting on the fact that the social security benefits are still intact. Jeff Nesbit, a former SSA official who used to work under Joe Biden‘s administration, called the email “unbelievable” and “unconscionable,” and continued saying that there has been this sort of political statement from the agency before

Despite the fact that Donald Trump has frequently promised to remove taxes on social security during his reign, especially in the previous year, his new tax law doesn’t seem to be going that way.

Though Trump has continued to make the claim even when the bill was signed into law, this has eventually contributed to the increased confusion among the seniors who were looking forward to having tax relief.

The SSA’s misleading email to recipients is concerned about political interference in federal agencies.

Over 70 million people receive Social Security benefits, including retirees, survivors, and individuals with disabilities. The email and its false claims underscore how the administration’s policies and political strategies are affecting the lives of Americans, especially vulnerable seniors who depend on Social Security.
