It’s hard to believe, but Usha Vance, SLOTUS, has revealed that she had no idea JD Vance would be the president’s pick for the VP when he won the election. She got the news just five minutes before the announcement.
Just five minutes before the public learned about it, Usha Vance was still processing the news. She revealed this while interviewing for the Meghan McCain podcast. Usha discusses what it’s like being in the national political limelight and the personal cost at which it comes.
When she learned about Vance’s new role, she claimed it felt like a bolt of lightning. She tells how she did not have an opportunity to think about it or plan what to do. The life she and her family had known was about to change. Her lifestyle, her identity, and the resistance that may come with the new role.
She states her dream world would be living at home and being able to continue her career. As the daughter of immigrant parents, Usha had a career in law and was planning to take it further. However, life had other plans for her. Earlier, she kept a low political profile, focusing on family and career.
Currently, she has accepted her role and is along for the ride. She is okay if her career takes up in the next four years or happens any other time in the future. Amidst all the political chaos and expectations from her, she strives for normalcy like any other millennial.

She skips hair appointments, chooses athleisure over formal outfits, and wants to remain low-key. But that’s far from possible now. Since she is the first South Asian to have been in this role, she even brushes to acknowledge this and says we have moved beyond trying to count firsts.
Now that Vance is the VP, Usha is supportive of him and ensures to be present making public appearances. Everyone notices how she gushes at her husband and is always smiling looking at him. The duo seems perfect on camera.
While Vance has responsibilities of the Trump administration and the president on him, Usha has taken more of a trad role handling kids at home even though she was clueless about his role in the beginning. She did not expect him to be the VP.
After coming into the public eye, Usha shares how people see her differently. Some look at her with admiration, and some with discomfort. She also has to deal with looks of disdain. It’s all a part of a very public life.

She describes how distant people are socially due to several reasons, such as signs of respect or discomfort. Even her kids are impacted by this as they get to hear about what’s going on around the world. The kids don’t play usual games but about current events.
Some other topics covered in the interview were Vance’s role done by Frieda Pinto in Hillbilly Elegy and how she consumes protein as a vegetarian Hindu. Her response to this was spot on with her authenticity that she’d just be herself if she was in Cincinnati.
