After bombing Iran‘s nuclear sites, Donald Trump made another surprising announcement. On Monday night, the POTUS claimed that finally a ceasefire agreement had been reached. He claimed that Israel and Iran have agreed upon a ceasefire for the foreseeable future and it would bring an end to a week of escalating violence in the region.
Using his social media “Truth Social” as his official press announcement platform, Trump posted that both nations had agreed to a phased ceasefire. He said that Iran initiated the halt in attacks. And Israel followed suit after 12 hours. Trump also promised an end to the conflict in the next 24 hours.
“This is a War that could have gone on for years, and destroyed the entire Middle East, but it didn’t, and never will,” Trump wrote. “God bless Israel, God bless Iran, God bless the Middle East, God bless the United States of America, and GOD BLESS THE WORLD!”
Donald Trump in his peculiar fashion also named the conflict “The 12-Day War”. The conflict started between Israel and Iran after the former attacked Iran over speculations about the development of nuclear weapons. After persuasion from the Israeli government and against the better judgment of his cabinet, Trump ordered military strikes on the Iranian nuclear site thus successfully entering into the conflict.

These strikes were conducted with B-2 bombers and “bunker buster” munitions. It signalled a dramatic escalation upon US entry.
However, there was confusion and scepticism surrounding the announcement of the cease-fire. It was more so because neither Israel nor Iran had publicly confirmed the ceasefire. Shortly after Trump’s social media post, there were multiple explosions in Tehran as reported by CNN. These suggested the hostilities had not ceased.
Upon further interjection, an Iranian official told CNN that there was no ceasefire proposal made to Iran and the Iranian government had made no such plans or commitments. They also said that American and Israeli governments are trying to be deceptive.

“At this very moment, the enemy is committing aggression against Iran, and Iran is on the verge of intensifying its retaliatory strikes, with no ear to listen to the lies of its enemies,” the official said.
Iran then launched a retaliatory missile strike on the U.S. Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar on Monday which in turn escalated the tensions. As all the bases in the Middle East were already on high alert, the base in Qatar was ready for any attack. Most missiles were intercepted, yet one reportedly evaded the defence systems.
Trump had dismissed the attack and called it a “very weak response.” However, Iran has called the strike a proportionate response to American strikes. They also claimed that they intentionally targeted an area outside populated regions to avoid civilian casualties.

Qatar has condemned the missile attack on its soil, They have called it a “flagrant violation” of its sovereignty and international law. The Iranian government also broadcasted this launch on state television. It had martial music and nationalistic imagery. The screen caption called it “a mighty and successful response” to “America’s aggression.”
While Trump may be claiming another “apparent” ceasefire for his publicity stunt to win the Nobel Peace Prize, the situation on the ground tells an entirely different story. Trump praised both Iran and Israel for their “stamina, courage, and intelligence” in reaching an alleged ceasefire, yet both nations are still at odds and ready to escalate the situation more.
Israeli forces are still bombing civilian areas and symbolic theocratic sites in Iran in an attack that was to destroy nuclear weapons. They are still denying any attempts towards regime change.

There were reports that Israel had a plan to assassinate Iran’s Supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei which was vetoed by Trump. But there is no solid evidence for any such plans or veto process.
Right now all that is known is that even after Trump claimed that a ceasefire was agreed upon, nations involved in the conflict have not made any such announcement. Trump’s announcement of a cease-fire is more aspirational than actionable.
