Has Texas become the new crime capital? With a series of stories on child abuse reported from the state in recent weeks, it has become a matter of utmost concern. Nearly a year after the main incident, the couple has been recently arrested after their child was found dead inside a hotel drawer. The police allegedly claimed that she was placed inside it to sleep.

In the awful incident, the child was kept in the drawer with a towel stuffed “around the edges” to prevent her from “kicking the drawer open”—due to the baby’s “piercing” screams. Brookelynn Fancher, the four-month-old baby was found unresponsive inside a drawer in the parents’ room, according to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.

As per Law&Crime, the couple Destiny Campos, 22, and Jeremy Fancher, 39, were residing at a Days Inn & Suites in the 7100 block of Rancho Mission Drive in the Mission Bend area of Harris County. Paramedics arrived at Room 111 around 1 p.m. and tried to retrieve Brookelynn but failed.

Destiny Campos told investigators that Fancher often complained about the baby’s screams being painful to his ears and would feed her a bottle to quiet her. She said he would occasionally close the drawer and stuff a towel around its edges to prevent the baby from pushing it open. In one earlier incident, the housekeeper of the Inn reportedly entered the room between 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., found the drawer fully shut, and opened it to discover Brookelynn crying inside.

Campos was passed out and unresponsive while her 18-month-old daughter was on the floor eating cookie crumbs, on one occasion. When the housekeeper confronted Campos, she allegedly laughed and said it was “okay.” The incident that happened on May 26, 2024, left the cops horrified. On the day of Brookelynn’s death, Destiny Campos claimed she had asked Fancher to care for the baby while she slept. She refused to place the child in the drawer.

However, Jeremy told the officer the baby was already inside the closed drawer when he arrived. Before leaving to go to a local store, he said the drawer was slightly open but not enough to see inside. When he returned, he allegedly found Brookelynn lying sideways and not breathing. He removed her from the drawer and attempted CPR.

After interrogation, as per the complaint filed, the pathetic father of the deceased child, Jeremy Fancher, admitted that he was the last person to place Brookelynn in the drawer, wrapped in a white hospital blanket. Destiny Campos was arrested on June 20 and charged with murder, and her husband was taken into custody the next day.

The horrible mother, Destiny, showed no sign of any guilt or remorse as late Brookelynn’s maternal grandmother told the cops that she, who was allegedly pregnant again, had said, “I’m going to have a girl. That replaces the one I lost.”

Thanks to social media and the efficient legal system in Texas for bringing such sad and disgusting cases of child abuse and homicide to light. Some people are not capable of being parents, and hence, their kids suffer in such fatal ways. We hope justice is served to the innocent baby who lost their life. We hope we keep reminding ourselves that abuse, crime, and love cannot go hand in hand. No amount of excuses can ever justify the heinous act of crime
