Teen born without uterus plans to be a mom

Years ago, a teen’s mom was on a mission to understand her daughter’s health struggles and know what was wrong with her. The mother, Andye, figured out her daughter Lacey was born without a uterus. She had a condition, MRKH, which is called Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser syndrome. Finding out the truth about her health was not a straight road; they had to go through several doctors and wait until the diagnosis was confirmed.

When Lacey was just a teenager, the question was about her menstruation. She hadn’t started her periods like other girls. All her friends had started their journey to motherhood, but she kept waiting. Both the mother and daughter were worried about the situation. They went to the doctor and were assured that it would happen. They just had to wait for a while.

Some doctors told them it happens late for some women. Moreover, there are certain ailments women are more susceptible to. After a few months she still hadn’t gotten her period, so they decided to consult a pediatrician. The next step was to get an ultrasound done to learn more. Even after the ultrasound they were told things were just fine and they should wait a while.

After another consultation with a pediatric gynecologist, Lacey was put on medication that was known to be effective in just two weeks. However, that did not work, and she took another medication to help with the issue. This was another unsuccessful venture for them. So after this, they only had one option–an exploratory surgery. Lacey went through an MRI to confirm what was going on in her body.

The last option to do an explorative surgery was something the doctor suggested after exhausting all options, reports People. Lacey’s mom Andye knew something was wrong and she went online to search for all the things that may be happening. She found out about MRKH. She found that Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser syndrome, short for MRKH, is a congenital condition.

Infants are born without a uterus/vagina, or these organs may be underdeveloped to function normally. The mother did not want to believe it at first. It was a shock to her, and on the day of the MRI, her daughter spent more than two hours in the room. They got the results after a few days, and it changed all their lives. The doctors confirmed that Lacey has MRKH- she was born without a uterus. Lacey was in disbelief as she had always wanted to be a mom, and now this news made her heart sink, and she wasn’t able to do that.

The doctor comforted her, telling her about the options she had, but she was too upset at that time. Lacey and her family were determined to find a solution and spent the first few months dealing with the news. It wasn’t just a physical ailment, but the impact was mental as well.

Lacey’s whole life was on the verge of impact, including her intimate relationships and the chance of having a family. Since she needed a community of people going through the same, Lacey let her mom, Andye, share her story online. She met 40 other girls in Seattle with the same condition. The support group helped her realize that she’ll be fine emotionally. Some women with same condition have had success via womb transplant.

Now, Lacey is an advocate and helps other teens who get the same diagnosis. She even got into a relationship with Pete, who he later married. She told him upfront that she couldn’t have kids. Now they are exploring surrogacy to have kids as they moved to Georgia. Pete is very supportive of her financially since surrogacy will be a costly affair.

He joined the army, so they could have enough funds when they choose to have kids via surrogacy. Now, the couple is waiting for him to come back from deployment to start the process. Their story acts as hope for many people struggling with infertility.
