Kerrien Dates, allegedly killed his grandmother with a hammer and left with her car, as has been reported by Charlotte Observer, Fox 13 Memphis and WREG. According to these outlets, the Tennessee man was pulled over and eventually arrested in Jackson, which is 90 miles away from Memphis, where he lived with his grandmother, Sonya Dates.

On June 4, after killing her grandmother, as Kerrien had hit the road, he was stopped by the police. When he was asked if he knew why he was pulled over, he confessed to his crime, saying, “I hit Sonya in the head with a hammer and I think I killed her.”

While talking to the media outlets that covered the news, the Memphis Police Department (MPD) said that on June 4, Kerrien’s mother came back to their house at around 4:30 pm. That was when she discovered the body of her mother, Sonya, lying in a pool of blood. She was 58 years old and beside her body, there was a hammer as Kerrien’s mother mentioned.

Kerrien, who is 23 years old, was already having arguments with his grandmother, as his mother mentioned. Moreover, Sonya had also decided to kick her grandson out of the house as a result of these arguments and to ensure safety. Tracey Holloman, one of the neighbors, shed some light on the relationship between Sonya and Kerrien and how the latter appeared to be troubled.

Tracy said, “Sunday I did see him and his hair was really big and everything and I thought it was strange he was going in and out of the house and it is sad to see she is gone.” She further added, “She was a good person she didn’t bother anybody she did not deserve it, I am praying for the family.”

The police said that Sonya had sustained four injuries caused by blunt force trauma at the back of her head. PEOPLE further reported, “a paramedic pronounced her dead at the scene. Investigators also found that her 2020 Chevrolet Camaro was missing from outside the Memphis home, and they issued an alert for a stolen car.”
