Michelle Obama can definitely have a sigh of relief now, concerning the fact that she has raised her daughters incredibly well. However raising them was for sure not an easy task – which was at the time when she wasn’t wanting another child after Sasha and Malia Obama.

While speaking to Tina Knowles, Beyoncé‘s mother, on a May 2025 episode of her podcast “IMO,” Michelle opened up about a significant difficulty while raising her older daughter, Malia.

Barack Obama‘s spouse gave an explanation on the way Malia would rectify her little sister, Sasha, who is three years Malia’s junior. “I would have to pull [Malia] aside and be like, ‘Don’t step on my child.’ Right?” Michelle told Knowles, adding, “You know, ‘No one stepped on you.'”

Malia even gave some bossy attitudes which further changed their dinner discussions. “We got to the point at our dinner table where we just didn’t talk about school at all,” Michelle said.

“It would be like, you know, ‘Okay, you passed’ — I didn’t want to hear about grades … because I didn’t know what kind of student Sasha would be,” reflecting on the fact that the girls might’ve inclined to negatively compare their own differences.

However, concerning efforts Michelle gave, on equally praising bth her daughters, she said that it backfired on her relationship with Malia. “To this day, Malia still feels like I don’t give her enough credit,” she said. One would assume that the situation might have been fixed by now since her daughters are now grown adults but it seems like Malia is not no over dinner table rules.

Is everything fixed between Michelle and Malia now?

Since leaving the White House, the mother-daughter relationship has only gotten stronger. On Amy Poehler’s podcast, Michelle Obama disclosed a significant bonding moment she had with Malia Obama, describing it as a “Good Hang,” and also said that this might not have happened with her husband being in the White House.

“We were in Martha’s Vineyard, I’m driving, she turns on the radio and starts playing some of our favorite songs, and we’re singing at the top of our lungs,” she explained. “I’d never had that experience with her from teenagers on.”

Concerning the security protocol Michelle would not have been allowed to teach his daughter about the milestone teenage experience of learning to drive. As per sources, the Secret Service taught her in 2015. And thus we can understand where the relationship between them was fixed.

Malia is currently now an adult, as mentioned, and is working on her film career, and Michelle has said that it seems to her that she has switched roles with her eldest. “They’re raising me,” Michelle told Jennifer Hudson of Malia and Sasha Obama.

“They are smart, they are funny,” she added. “I love spending time with them.” Subsequently, Malia is also incredibly proud of her mom. Michelle’s 2020 Netflix documentary states in a scene that – “Becoming,” Malia had sweet words to say about her mother’s journey from first lady to best-selling author: “Those eight years weren’t for nothing” (via “Good Morning America”).
