On Monday, May 26, 2025, Jennifer Lopez took the stage at Fontainebleau Las Vegas to begin the American Music Awards with a large, ostentatious opening act that was full of hit songs and PDA. A dance routine set to a mega medley of 23 different songs, including “Birds of a Feather” by Billie Eilish, “Die With a Smile” by Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars, “Pink Pony Club” by Chappell Roan, and Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us,” to name a few, kicked off the show. This year’s show was hosted by the “On the Floor” singer for the second time, having previously hosted in 2015.
Lopez, who is accustomed to wearing sultry, almost inappropriate attire, obviously sought to amp up the eroticism with a glittering bodysuit, a sci-fi-inspired helmet, and sensual choreography. In between scenes of passionate gyrating, Lopez engaged in full-on making out with multiple backup dancers during the seductive performance. As Lopez strutted around the platform and kept making out with other dancers, both male and female, the skin-tight, crystal-covered body suit glistened in the intense spotlights.

Clearly, Lopez intended to create a moment that would be remembered. Regretfully, several admirers of the “On the Floor” singer weren’t quite impressed with the performance and vented their displeasure on X (previously Twitter). “Why is Jennifer Lopez performing an interpretive dance for me at the #AMAS?” one person asked, while another remarked, “What on earth was that opening act by Jennifer Lopez to start AMAS?” Nevertheless, despite the criticism, the singer continued to receive praise from a large number of followers for being an “icon.”
Less than a year ago, Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck’s two-year marriage ended, which was apparently characterized by angry outbursts of jealousy. The “Argo” star and Lopez separated, and Lopez filed for divorce in August 2024. Their divorce was finalized this past January. But Lopez’s brief stunt earlier in October at the American Music Awards 50th Anniversary Special, one of her first appearances after the breakup, also backfired.

Although Lopez’s first song wasn’t a huge hit for everyone, it wasn’t one of her most contentious performances either. Indeed, many of Lopez’s ardent supporters praised her on X for hosting the evening’s star-studded ceremony. “Jennifer Lopez is literally one of the greatest performers of all time,” X user @EricUnedited wrote. “This lady is almost 56 years old and performing better than people half her age. Damn. Damn. DAMN.” Another X user celebrated her legacy writing, “30 years of dancing, 55 years old, Jennifer Lopez STILL GOT IT!!! She will forever be an icon.”
