America is gearing up for a heavy rush in travel this coming weekend. Millions of citizens utilize their Memorial Day holiday period and travel out of their cities/towns every year. A similar trend will be witnessed this week as nearly 45.1 million Americans are expected to travel domestically for Memorial Day. Therefore, TSA has issued a prior warning to the passengers.
Memorial Day falls on the last Monday of May. The federal holiday is marked to honor and mourn the US military personnel who died while serving the country. This year, the Memorial Day falls on May 26. So, this coming Thursday (on May 22), people will hit the road or take trains and flights to start their vacation.
AAA predicts a new record will be set this year, breaking the previous record of 44 million people traveling during the Memorial Day weekend. Stacey Barber, Vice President of AAA Travel, said, “Memorial Day weekend getaways don’t have to be extravagant and costly. While some travelers embark on dream vacations and fly hundreds of miles across the country, many families just pack up the car and drive to the beach or take a road trip to visit friends. Long holiday weekends are ideal for travel because many people have an extra day off work and students are off from school.”
As per the projection, 39.5 million Americans are expected to travel by car at least 50 miles from their homes. 3.61 million are expected to travel by air while the rest 3.08 by other modes.
Last year, 3.55 million people traveled by air during the Memorial Day weekend. This year, the airports are bracing for a 2% increase in footfalls, with the majority of traffic at popular destinations like Chicago, New York, Orlando, Denver, and Seattle. TSA has issued an important advice for those planning to travel by air.
In its latest tweet, posted on May 20, TSA reminded people of guidelines about carrying a razor. The tweet reads, “Headed out on the epic family vacay? Don’t let your razor slow you down.”
TSA reminds that while disposable razors & cartridges are allowed in carry-on baggage, loose blades and straight razors are only allowed in check-in bags.

TSA also urged people not to “sweat it” and instead seek travel help by texting “SUMMER” to (275-872).
The warning comes days after TSA officers at Boston airport found a razor blade hidden in a hat. “That’s one cutting-edge accessory that should stay home,” TSA warned the passengers in a tweet.
